Roger Lee, the founder of Leap Frog Studios, has been involved with all of these entrepreneurial enterprises. He worked as an industrial design manager for HP for over 14 years, founded Roger Lee/Design Associates, serving as a creative design consultant to many of the Silicon Valley start-up companies for over 20 years. He has a Masters Degree in design from Stanford University and teaches digital art in the fine art department at Cuesta College.

IPad Digital Art Workshop

Apple’s IPad has created an opportunity to create digital art using a very sophisticated direct pen-on-screen drawing and painting technique. With your IPad and a conductive drawing stylus you have the equivalent of a state of the art Wacom drawing tablet system that you can create hand drawn artwork with the aid of powerful computer software applications.

Leap Frog Studios will be offering a hands-on workshop that will introduce basic instruction on how to create digital art from your personal digital photographs.

The workshop will cover basic instruction using the ArtStudio Drawing App and construction of a drawing stylus for use on your Ipad. The workshop is intended for the beginning digital artist with limited drawing skills. The IPad has created an opportunity for more people to enjoy the digital art experience.

Workshop Agenda:

1. Basic drawing and painting techniques using the ArtStudio App

- blending and layering techniques

- importing digital photo resources

2. Construct a personal drawing stylus from carbon tubing and conductive foam.

Learn techniques using a precision drawing stylus for more artistic expression

5. Print fine art gift prints with a HP Photosmart printer directly from your IPad over a WiFi network connection

Digital Art Workshop

This workshop is directed to the intermediate digital artist who would like to expand their capability with Photoshop. Each participant must have a laptop computer and Adobe Photoshop CS4 application. Bring visual source material (photographs, textures, sketches, paintings) for a composite digital art project you will be creating.

Day 1 November 21

Advanced Adobe Photoshop CS4 tools and techniques have created the opportunity for visual artists to explore compositing colors, textures, photographs, and watercolor washes into exciting digital art. The workshop will cover the following:

• Advanced layering techniques that allow the digital artists to mask, gradient blend and merge images in exciting new ways.

• Blending with layer masks and setting different blend modes between image layers to achieve dramatic visual effects

• Selecting parts of images by using different color channels and vector pen tool.

• Using refined edge tool to efficiently eliminate ragged pixilated edges of selections for merging multiple images.

• Coloring images with gradient blends

• Creating custom unique Photoshop brushes by defining brush presets

Day 2 November 22

InkAid coatings have created the opportunity to print inkjet images on alternative materials i.e. aluminum sheet metal, rice paper, art paper, silk, etc. Also images can be transferred to wood, plastic, glass, stone with “emulsion-skin” transfers. Coating a non-stick carrier sheet with acrylic gloss medium and InkAid creates emulsion-skins. Each student will print or transfer their digital artwork on a variety of surfaces. Aluminum sheet metal, rice paper and Arches printing paper will be provided. Artwork will be printed on a 17” Epson 3800 Printer with archival-pigmented inks.

Digital Arts workshop in the works

Learn how to turn your photographs into a fine art digital print using the latest Adobe Photoshop CS4 application. The two-day workshop will focus on creating a “digital montage” by combining digital photographs and original watercolor washes into a digital file that is printed on large format Epson printers with archival-pigmented inks.

The first day will focus on using some of Photoshop’s advanced techniques to merge images into a visual composition. Techniques will be demonstrated and then each student will create their own piece of art with photographs and hand-painted artwork. The second day will explore printing on alternative materials. Aluminum sheet metal, rice paper, watercolor paper, silk are some of the unique materials that can be used.

Prerequisites: Laptop computer with Adobe Photoshop CS4 (free trial copies at Adobe.com), Intermediate experience with Photoshop application, and Artistic imagination

The workshop will be given at the CorkStop Studios in San Luis Obispo County on California's beautiful Central Coast, half way between Los Angeles and San Francisco.

Alternative Print Surfaces

The workshop given at the CorkStop Studios was an opportunity for artists, art educators, photographers, printmakers, and serious hobbyists to learn about exciting creative applications that are available using inkAid precoat products. Participants brought photographs, drawings, paintings, prints on a digital flash drive and applied them to a variety of surfaces. I demonstrated how to prepare aluminum sheet metal, rice paper on a carrier sheet, gelatin transfer surface and transfer onto waterleaf art paper. Each person was given full access to the CorkStop Studio’s computers, Epson 3800 and 7800 large format inkjet printers. The results were an amazing collection of fine art digital prints.

InkAid products have opened the door for all visual artists to extend their creative vision into some new and exciting directions. CorkStop Studios Workshop II - Alternative Print Surfaces

Agenda – July 11, 2009, 10:00am-5:00pm

This is an agenda for the workshop demonstrations and a list of the different types of printing projects that will be created in the workshop. Each process will be demonstrated using the different materials and emulsions. It is essential that you prepare your images prior to the workshop and bring them on a flash drive or CD. Size your images with margins to fit the different materials (one image per material). I recommend 300 dpi minimum resolution at image size to get a quality print. Save your image files as a PDF. The printer we will be using is an Epson 3800 with 8-color pigment-based UltraChrome K3 Ink.

Demonstrations:

1. Color calibrating demonstration with X-rite ColorMunki:

• Display monitor calibration

• Printer calibration

• ICC printing profiles

2. Printing on aluminum surfaces with InkAid emulsions

3. Printing on Rice Paper with a carrier sheet

3. Gelatin transfer onto fiberboard with DASS transfer film

New developments in inks and pre-coat emulsions have made an opportunity possible for artists to apply their images on a variety of non-traditional materials. Through the use of digital computers, high performance printers, and pre-coat emulsions, artists can express themselves on a variety of materials. Digital artists are using aluminum, steel, wood, silk fabric, ceramics to enhance their artistic expressions. The workshop wil focus on aluminum sheet metal and Fine Art paper.

I would like to welcome all the artists that are taking CorkStop Studios Workshop I, “Digital Mono Print: Revealed”. For those I didn’t meet at the May 22 show, I would like to introduce my self. My name is Roger Lee and I am one of the resident artists working at CorkStop Studios and teach digital art at Cuesta College.

So I can have a better understanding of who you are, and what you would like to gain from the class, I would like you to bring some photographs of your work to share with the class. As a reminder, make sure you bring visual source material that you would like to work with on a flash drive or CD. A flatbed scanner will be available for reflective artwork (limited to A4 size). For those students that have the skill, you can get started by referencing my June 10, 2009 post: “Digital Halftone for Intaglio Printing” and bring the file to the workshop for printing on DASS film.

Alternative environmental friendly fine art printing

ImagOn is a polymer film that is adhered to a thin plastic sheet or metal plate. The plate is exposed with UV light source through artwork created on a transparent mylar film material. The plate is developed in a solution of sodium carbonate. The artwork plate is then printed on an intaglio press. ImagOn avoids the use of hazardous chemicals used in traditional fine art etching plates.

Relief printing plates can also be created using another polymer plastic product called solarplates. These plates are exposed by using the sun as a light source and then developed in plain water.

Akua printing inks is a water-based inks developed with gum arabic as the binder allowing for printing without the exposure to hazardous chemicals and solvents. The consistencies of the inks are changed through a series of modifiers that give the artists complete control of the ink material. Also by modifying the inks, a variety of painting techniques can be used to create your art.

InkAid is another exciting new product that allows the artist the ability to print on a variety of materials: plastic, metal, ceramic, and wood. The image can be printed directly or through a technique of gelatin emulsion transfers.

I will be exploring the use of these products through a series of hands-on workshops with original artwork created with the aid of the digital computer. The computer allows the artists the ability to combine drawn, painted and photographic images together into a single piece of art that can be printed on traditional etching press or state of the art digital printers.

“Digital Mono Print: Revealed I”June 20th 2009

Digital Mono Print: Revealed is the first in a series of workshops on different print processes that were used to create some of the artwork exhibited at Corkstop Studios May art show. This workshop explores the use of traditional intaglio print making techniques using digital printing plates made with non-toxic ImagOn polymer film. Artwork can be created on a digital computer or through traditional art mediums on acetate film. The final print can be created on the intaglio press, or the artwork digitally scanned and printed on a high performance Epson printer. The class will explore creating a hybrid print using a combination of both printing methods.

Digital Mono Prints has been created by Roger Lee to share my interest in creating art using traditional fine art print making processes with the latest digital technologies.
